Fethiye lies in the Mugla Province, a part of the Aegean region in Turkey. It has a population of around 68000. Its bearing can be dated back to the ancient city of Telmessos. It holds the prized dignity of being Turkey's best known tourist centre; one which fetches a lot of tourists during summer.
Fethiye Museum is soaked in ancient brilliance and is a testimony to many civilizations that sprouted in the area; the oldest was the Lycian civilization. It was earlier known as Makri. Great population exchange was effected between Greece and Turkey during the ancient times.
Fethiye is extremely rich in its history. It was the centre of soothsaying and pledged its allegiance to Apollon. It's rich culture in the Roman and Hellenistic times can be gauged through its monuments. The tomb of Amyntas was constructed as an Ionic temple and it paid homage to the then Governor of Telmessos. A proper Roman theatre was built on the remnants of the Greek theatre in the 2nd century. It gives us thorough glimpses into the psyche of Romans (in terms of difference from the Greek Psyche). In the present day, there is a plan to fuse the open-air museum complex with the antediluvian theatre. Fethiye municipality is taking this task in its hand.
Fethiye saw the rise and fall of Greek, Roman, Hellenistic, and Ottoman Empire; the last under the notoriously famed Kemal Ataturk. Lycians along with Hittites participated in the Ancient war of Kadesh. This proves that they were among the oldest tribes of the region.
Xanthos, Letoon, Pinara, Cadianda are few of the top cities which need being visited, at least for the sake of examining what wealth of beauty lies in this place of ancient make.
